Mary Chamberlain is a novelist and historian, author of the international best seller The Dressmaker of Dachau (UK)/The Dressmaker’s War (USA). Published in the UK by The Borough Press in 2015 and in the USA by Random House in 2016, rights to this novel sold in nineteen territories worldwide and it was a best seller in France and Italy. Her second novel, The Hidden, was published by Oneworld in 2019 and The Forgotten, was published in June 2022. Her latest novel, The Lie, published in July 2023.
She is the author of many non-fiction books on women’s history and Caribbean history, as well as articles and edited collections. She is Emeritus Professor of Caribbean History at Oxford Brookes University and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her first book, the highly acclaimed Fenwomen: Portrait of Women in an English Village, was also the first book published by Virago Press, and the inspiration behind Caryl Churchill’s award winning play, Fen. Fenwomen was translated into French, and is now in its third UK edition.
